Malva sylvestris Wild Flower. Another malva beauty! It's a real challenge for me to decide between her and her 'sisters', the "Hollyhock Mallow", the "Mauritanian Mallow" and the "Mallow White Musk". This one has a particularly long flowering period. Her pink flowers with darker veins are edible and often used for tea. They'll give your cup of tea an exquisite colour. They are very popular with bees, bumblebees and butterflies, self-seed beautifully and are great in pots. PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

MY TIP:

Whether you start early or plant it outdoors, I recommend growing it in a pot. Then plant it in the bed as a seedling.

LOCATION

  • Sunny to partially shaded.
  • Well-drained, rather poor soils.
  • Enough space, as the plant likes to self-seed.

PRE-CULTURE

Pre-culture on the windowsill or in the greenhouse:March to April

  • Fill seed pots with loose potting soil.
  • Cover seeds with soil, dark germinator.
  • Keep soil evenly moist, but not wet.
  • Germination takes 10 – 20 days at 18 – 22 °C.
  • Harden off young plants and plant them outdoors when they are about 5 cm tall.

Direct sowing

Direct sowing into the bed:From April to July or in autumn.

  • Prepare the bed, loosen the soil, remove weeds.
  • Cover seeds with soil.
  • Water carefully.
  • After rising, space the seeds 20 – 30 cm apart.

CARE

  • Water regularly in the beginning, later only when dry.
  • No additional fertilization is necessary, some compost in spring is enough.
  • Remove faded flowers regularly for a longer flowering period.
  • Cut off seed heads in good time to prevent self-seeding.
